Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a total game-changer—super effective, non-toxic, and safe for all kinds of uses, from cleaning wounds to disinfecting your home. But here’s the deal: just because it’s gentle doesn’t mean you can mix it with anything. Some combos can be straight-up dangerous. Let’s break down what you should NEVER mix with HOCl and why.
1. Bleach (Sodium Hypochlorite)
If you only remember one thing from this list, let it be this—do NOT mix HOCl with bleach. Seriously. Mixing them creates chlorine gas, which is super toxic. Just don’t. Products like Clorox® Regular Bleach or Seventh Generation Disinfecting Bleach should stay far away from HOCl.
2. Ammonia-Based Cleaners
Trying to double up on cleaning power? Bad idea. HOCl mixed with ammonia-based products (like Windex® Original Glass Cleaner or Lysol® Power Bathroom Cleaner) can create chloramine vapors, which are nasty for your lungs and eyes. Definitely not worth it.
3. Hydrogen Peroxide
You might think mixing two disinfectants makes them even stronger, but in this case, nope. HOCl and hydrogen peroxide together can cause a corrosive reaction or, in high concentrations, even explode. Keep it away from products like Neutrogena® Rapid Clear Stubborn Acne Cleanser (which has peroxide) or Clairol BW2 Powder Lightener (a common hair bleach).
4. Vinegar or Acidic Cleaners
Vinegar lovers, listen up! While vinegar is great for cleaning, mixing it with HOCl is a bad move. This combo releases chlorine gas, and inhaling it can seriously mess with your breathing. So, avoid pairing HOCl with products like Heinz® Distilled White Vinegar, Lime-A-Way® Cleaner, or CLR® Calcium, Lime & Rust Remover.
5. Alcohol-Based Cleaners or Sanitizers
Ever heard of chloroform? Yeah, that thing from old-school crime movies. Mixing HOCl with alcohol can actually create chloroform, which is toxic and can make you dizzy, nauseous, or even knock you out in high enough amounts. Not a good time. Keep HOCl away from things like Purell® Advanced Hand Sanitizer or Isopropyl Rubbing Alcohol 70%.
